From the kickstarter updates for Ursula of Ulm, on the question of the best movies from 1977:
A banner year for civilization. The first and best Star Wars came out, whose special effects remain unsurpassed (the development of CGI notwithstanding). Altman's 3 Women and the superb The Spy Who Loved Me came out that year as well. Breaker! Breaker! was great if you love trucks, fighting, and CB lingo. But the one closest to my heart is Smokey and the Bandit. Burt Reynolds steals the show and the year. Give me a Diablo sandwich, a Dr. Pepper, and make it quick, I'm in a goddamn hurry. Plus, my mom drove the same Trans Am.
I remember wanting the Trans Am from the movie, or just a Trans Am in general even though I later settled on the Corvette as my favorite American sports car, Knight Rider notwithstanding. That said, my only truly solid movie memory from 1977 was, of course, Star Wars. I later came to appreciate Close Encounters and A Bridge Too Far - the latter being the reason for purchasing my second wargame, Storm Over Arnheim.
